Russia’s ambassador to the United States says five waves of NATO expansion have brought the western military alliance states closer to the country’s borders. Anatoly Antonov stressed that the bloc's efforts for the military development of the former Soviet republics are unacceptable to Moscow. This follows meetings of Russian officials with the US and NATO. Antonov said that the security talks focused on the ways to preserve peace and stability in Europe by working out security guarantees based on draft agreements proposed by Moscow. Tensions remain high between Russia and the West over a host of issues, including the bloc’s advancements and the conflict in Ukraine.
