Polls have opened in the Scottish parliamentary elections, results of which could impact on whether or not there is a second referendum on the region’s independence from the UK. A record number of Scots have already cast their ballots, with more than a million having registered to vote by post. The pro-independence Scottish National Party, SNP is seeking a majority in 129-member parliament. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has pledged to call another independence vote if her party gets a clear mandate. On Tuesday, Sturgeon challenged British Prime Minister Johnson to take the matter to court if he wants to prevent another referendum. In 2014, Scots voted by 55 to 45 percent to stay in the UK but the public opinion has changed gradually after Brexit.
