South Africa against granting Israel observer status

PressTV 24 views
South Africa has fiercely objected to the African Union’s decision to grant Israel an official observer status at the continental organization. In a strongly-worded statement, the South African foreign ministry called the move incomprehensible and inexplicable. It said the AU’s decision is even more shocking and appalling in a year that saw Israeli bombardments of Palestinians and continued settlements on their land. The African Union handed Israel the observer status on Thursday citing the regime’s help to the continent in its battle against the coronavirus pandemic and terrorism. South Africa says the AU Commission took the decision unilaterally without consulting its members. South Africa backs the Palestinian cause at international forums since formally establishing diplomatic relations with Palestine in 1995.
