Special Forces soldiers have overthrown Guinea's long-serving President Alpha Conde saying they have dissolved the country’s government and constitution. Elite army units’ head, Mamady Doumbouya, said poverty and endemic corruption had driven his forces to remove Conde from office. Doumbouya said on state television that his forces have closed the country’s land and air borders. The junta also announced a nationwide curfew until further notice as well as the replacement of governors by the military. Meanwhile, the African Union has condemned the military takeover in Guinea, demanding immediate liberation of the president. Conde’s whereabouts are not known. He won a third term in October after changing the constitution to allow him to stand again. That led to violent protests spearheaded by the opposition.
