UN: No account of 1000s of migrants in Libya

PressTV 16 views
The UN migration agency has expressed concern over the disappearance of thousands of Europe-bound migrants, who were intercepted and returned to Libya. A spokesman for the International organization for migration says out of 24-thousand migrants intercepted this year, only 6-thousand have been accounted for in Libya’s detention centers. Safa Msehli said the whereabouts of thousands of others remain unknown, adding that they might be subject to trafficking or extortion for release. Libya has long been a transit hub for African and Middle Eastern migrants fleeing war and poverty in their home countries. Those returned to shore are taken to Libya's government-run detention centers, where they are often held in miserable conditions, facing abuse.
