The Iraqi government has condemned as illegal a recent conference in the country’s Kurdistan region in support of normalization of ties between Baghdad and Tel-Aviv. In a statement released on Saturday, Prime Minister’s office said the government would politically and legally reject the normalization concept with the Israeli regime. It said Iraq has overtly expressed its firm stance in support of Palestine and would continue to condemn any hostilities toward the Palestinian nation. Senior Iraqi cleric and political leader, Ammar al-Hakim also reacted, calling the Palestinian cause the most important issue for Arab and Islamic nations. On Friday, 300 people gathered in the city of Erbil to demand the normalization of ties between Iraq and Israel. The event was organized by a US think tank and attended by several Israelis as well as Iraqi tribal leaders.
